Another winter storm passes, rain on the cape, snow in the mountains. I’ve yet to go skiing (very soon…) still I’m already gearing up for the 2024 Fishing Season.
Welcome my two brand new Cheeky “Spray” fly reels!
The one on the left is a Cheeky “Spray 450” Burn/Steel and the one on the right is a Cheeky “Spray 400” Electric Blue/Steel. The 450 is for lines 9-12 and the 400 is for lines 7-9. Both reels feature the new & improved gasket drag system and are manufactured from the highest-grade aerospace aluminum. The result are two beautiful, lightweight, and powerful reels.
Gearing Up for 2024
I have yet to purchase any new fly rods, although that is always tempting. Perhaps after a nice tax refund and if I can manage to keep my dog from another $1200 vet visit I may go shopping. St. Croix is now featuring its new EVO series fly rods. Expensive, but not quite as expensive as the industry leaders, still I’m curious to see what they’ve been up to.
As for spinning reels, well they just don’t make ’em like they used to. For many many years I sent my reels back to Shimano and for a modest fee of $25 they came back as good as new. Unfortunately that program ended so I’ve found a local person that performs repairs. I’m crossing my fingers that he is able to find replacement parts for these old reels ‘cuz I’m really just too cheap to buy new ones.
Even though fishing season is five months away, I am booking for those months. It’s not too soon to get on the calendar, especially if you are only going to be on the cape for a few specific days. Send me an email and see what’s available.

Until then, I want to wish you all a happy ski season, as that is appropriate for January!
