Preparation for the season

lots of fishing flies and fly reels ready to go in preparation for another season

I’ve been guiding for a long time. This season will mark 20+ years of guiding for me. One nice thing is that after 20 years, the preparation for the season becomes more and more routine.

I mentioned some of this in my last blog in terms of checking fly lines to be sure they don’t need to be replaced, tying some of my favorite fly patterns, and collecting some of the equipment that has migrated throughout the house over the course of the winter.

Orange gurgler flies, meant to look like squid. Stripers like these flies a lot!

This year things are looking good. I was able to tie a bunch of flies without needing to purchase any new materials. I’ve touched base with a local tier that ties some very effective patterns and that I can purchase at a fairly reasonable price. (That is unless as my friend always says “I value my time at zero”). And most importantly, I picked up some dry roasted peanuts at the grocery store!

I know that my website talks about Cape Cod Potato Chips. And although there will no doubt be a bag of those on board come actual fishing season, it’s the peanuts that truly make me and my clients very happy. There’s nothing like a mid-morning salty snack to keep the energy up.

Truth is, it’s amazing to be thinking about fishing while the snow is still flying up north. This weekend nor’easter is bringing sleet and a lot of wind and rain to Cape Cod.

olive/white and chartreuse/white weighted clouser flies. A go to fly for striped bass.

I guess that’s why I’m writing this “fishing report” today. I really don’t have a lot else to do as it’s a quiet Sunday and the weather is miserable!

Nevertheless, it’s always a good day to BOOK A TRIP!!!!
