It’s not unusual for clients who are first time visitors to Cape Cod to ask me about the winter weather. As someone that grew up here on Cape Cod, I’ve experienced a lot of variations on the weather that winter brings, nevertheless, there are some consistencies.
One is WIND! Cape Cod is a windy place. In summer time, it’s called a smoky sou’wester. In the winter they’re called nor’easters, or one of my childhood favorites, the “Montreal Express”. Nor’easters are coastal storms that have a tendency to get stuck on the cape. They bring with them relentless easterly winds. The “off the water” winds are brisk as they carry the sea air straight through your warmest winter gear.
SNOW, sort of…
The next thing is snow. Do we get snow on Cape Cod? The answer is yes we do. How long does it last? Typically, not very long.
This past weekend was typical. It was a chilly Saturday with snow predicted to begin around dinner time. When I left my neighbor’s house after dinner, I walked through a gorgeous winter wonderland of 3-4″ of fresh light powder. My mind quickly turned to skiing.
However, after a good night’s sleep, I woke to wind, rain, and slush! Lots of slush.
As a dog owner, I don’t have the luxury of staying indoors all day. My seven year old lab requires daily walks. So on go the galoshes, the waterproof parka, and a bunch of determination. Sloshing through the slush and sliding in the mud is just part of our routine outings. Luckily, the dog doesn’t like the weather much more than I do so once business is attended to, she is happy to return to the warmth of the fireplace.
So winter weather on Cape Cod… WIND, snow, rain, slush. Yep, that about covers it!
